Bariatric Shower Chairs & Stools Australia – Heavy Duty Shower Seating for Larger Clients

Safety and Mobility supplies a range of high quality bariatric shower chairs and stools designed and load-tested to safely support clients who require heavier-duty shower seating. Our bariatric shower chairs are available in a variety of seat widths and weight capacities, providing a safe, comfortable, and dignified showering solution for bariatric clients across home care, aged care, hospital, and disability settings.

Standard shower chairs are typically rated to safe working loads (SWL) of around 110–130 kg. For clients whose weight exceeds these limits, using a standard shower chair is unsafe and inappropriate. Our bariatric range offers SWLs from 200 kg up to 400 kg, with wider seat widths to accommodate clients of larger body dimensions and ensure they can shower safely and comfortably.

Choosing the Right Bariatric Shower Chair

Selecting the correct bariatric shower chair involves more than simply choosing the highest weight capacity available. The right product depends on a combination of factors including the client’s weight and body dimensions, the required seat width, the level of back and arm support needed, the configuration of the shower space, and whether carer assistance is required during showering.

Our team is experienced in helping clinicians, occupational therapists, carers, and individuals work through these considerations to identify the most appropriate product. If you are unsure which chair is right for your client or situation, we encourage you to contact us or call (02) 9983 9520 before purchasing — our staff are happy to assist and can often resolve the key questions quickly.

Our Bariatric Shower Chair Range

Safety and Mobility stocks a focused range of bariatric shower chairs covering a variety of seat widths and weight capacities to suit different client profiles. All chairs in our bariatric range feature corrosion-resistant aluminium or steel frames with zinc coating to prevent rusting in the wet shower environment. Several models include padded seating, removable armrests, and removable backrests to accommodate different levels of support requirements and transfer techniques. The seat designs allow water to drain away freely during use.

Not Sure Which Chair to Choose? We’re Here to Help

Bariatric shower chairs involve a meaningful investment and must be correctly matched to the individual client to be safe and effective. If you are purchasing on behalf of a client, or if you have questions about seat width, weight ratings, armrest configurations, or compatibility with a specific shower space, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team before placing your order. We would rather take a few minutes to help you get the right product than have you receive something unsuitable.

Bariatric Commodes — Also Available

In addition to shower chairs and stools, Safety and Mobility supplies a range of bariatric mobile shower commodes and bariatric commodes and over toilet aids designed for use in both the shower and over the toilet. Extra wide seats are available in open and closed front configurations, with further customisation options available for some models. Contact our team to find out more about our commode range and to discuss which product is most appropriate for your client’s needs.

NDIS Funding for Bariatric Shower Chairs

Bariatric shower chairs are commonly funded under the NDIS Assistive Technology support category, where assessed by an occupational therapist as reasonable and necessary for the individual’s daily living and personal care needs. Safety and Mobility is a registered NDIS provider and can provide itemised quotes for NDIS participants, plan managers, and support coordinators. Contact our team to request a quote or to discuss the funding process.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bariatric Shower Chairs & Stools

Q: What weight capacity do I need for a bariatric shower chair? The safe working load (SWL) of the shower chair must exceed the client’s body weight — ideally with a reasonable margin above it. Standard shower chairs are rated to approximately 110–130kg. Bariatric shower chairs are available in SWL ratings of 200kg, 300kg, and 400kg. As a general guide, always choose a chair rated above the client’s maximum weight, not one where the client’s weight sits at the upper limit of the chair’s capacity. If you are unsure which weight rating is appropriate, our team is happy to advise and consult with a client’s OT or other health care professional — call us on (02) 9983 9520 before purchasing.

Q: What seat width do I need for a bariatric shower chair? Seat width is one of the most important factors to get right when selecting a bariatric shower chair. The seat needs to be wide enough for the client to sit comfortably without the armrests pressing into their thighs or sides, but not so wide that it becomes unstable or fails to fit within the shower recess. Our range includes seat widths from 50cm through to 65cm. As a starting point, the seat should be at least 5cm wider than the client’s hip measurement when seated. If you are sourcing the chair for a client, we recommend checking the shower recess dimensions as well as the client’s body dimensions before selecting a width. Our team can help you work through this — get in touch if you’d like guidance.

Q: Can bariatric shower chairs be funded through the NDIS? Yes. Bariatric shower chairs are typically eligible for NDIS funding under the Assistive Technology support category, where an occupational therapist has assessed the item as reasonable and necessary for the participant’s personal care needs. Safety and Mobility is a registered NDIS provider and can provide properly itemised quotes in the format required by plan managers and support coordinators. Contact us on (02) 9983 9520 or via our quote request form to get started.

Q: What is the difference between a bariatric shower chair and a bariatric mobile shower commode? A bariatric shower chair is a stationary seat used inside the shower recess to allow the client to bathe in a seated position. A bariatric mobile shower commode is a wheeled chair with a commode aperture underneath, which can be wheeled directly into a roll-in shower and also positioned over a toilet. The commode is the more versatile option for clients who need carer-assisted transfers or who use both the shower and toilet with the same piece of equipment. The shower chair is generally the more appropriate option for clients who can independently transfer into the shower space. Safety and Mobility stocks both — view our bariatric mobile shower commodes or contact us to discuss which is most suitable for your situation.

Q: Are bariatric shower chairs suitable for use in aged care facilities as well as at home? Yes. The bariatric shower chairs and stools in our range are suitable for use in both residential home care and institutional settings including aged care facilities, hospitals, and disability support accommodation. For facility or bulk purchasing enquiries, or if you need to match chairs to specific shower room dimensions or facility standards, please contact our team directly on (02) 9983 9520 — we can assist with product selection and provide appropriate pricing and documentation for institutional purchases.
